Company History

What began in 1998 as a small DJ production room has grown into one of the world’s top production facilities. After 4 years of success with Studio B, industry demands moved the Pressure Point crew to unveil plans for a first of its kind, state of the art production facility in Chicago's burgeoning South Loop. Hiring Kierkegaard & Assoc. to implement the design was the first step in a 2-year process to bring the only facility of its kind to the Midwest. Construction began in early 2002 on the new studio A. Their were no shortcuts taken to isolate and perfect the acoustics of every room. All of this hard work and attention to detail was rewarded by Pressure Point being named studio of the year by Mix Magazine in 2004. As we have continued to grow we maintain the same high standards that have blessed us with all of the great music that has been part of the Pressure Point Family from the beginning.

Studio Design

Pressure Point Recording Studios brings Chicago's music industry back to life with its brand new state-of-the-art Studio A, designed in close collaboration with the studio owners by acoustic consultants Kirkegaard Associates, architects Krueck & Sexton, and lighting consultants Schuler Shook.

Located at 2239 South Michigan Avenue, Pressure Point Recording Studios are situated on Chicago’s historic Record Row. The building houses two main Studios - A and B. The newly designed Studio A includes a Control Room (featuring a 72-channel SSL 9000 K XL), Tracking Room, Live Room, Drum Room, Midi Room and two Vocal Booths. The design team came up with a unique and clever approach to isolation detailing, taking into account the historic building’s limited floor-to-floor height. A secondary window within the Live Room provides the primary acoustic isolation from the street noise of Michigan Avenue, keeping the historic façade unaltered.

The Tracking Room enjoys natural light through second-floor skylights, which use a special 3-layer system designed to keep external sound out and maximize isolation to the third floor. Structural upgrades of the building were necessary to support the weight of the isolation wall construction.

Kirkegaard Associates designed the shape and finish of the Control Room to accommodate 5.1 as well as stereo recording mixing. Bass traps were designed for the Control Room after taking room-mode measurements both mid- and post-construction to optimize their effectiveness in providing an even response in the room.

The desire for easy variability of the Tracking Room led to the unique design of an adjustable wall of hinged panels, allowing the user to choose a surface which is reflective, absorptive, diffusive, or a combination of the three. Curtains can also be deployed over a rough stone mosaic wall to provide either diffuse reflection or absorption. The result of these variable elements is a space that has a wide range of acoustic conditions with ease of adjustment.
